The Malankara Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church is an autonomous jurisdiction of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch in India.

History

The Malankara Syriac Orthodox Church, sometimes known simply as the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, is one of the oldest Christian communities in India. It is believed to have been established by the Apostle Thomas in his missionary journey to India in 52 AD.

Leadership

The head of the Malankara Church is known as the Catholicos. The church is currently led by Catholicos Baselios Thomas I. In the Syrian Orthodox Church hierarchy, the Catholicos is second in rank to the supreme spiritual head, H.H. Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East.
